Food Troops CIC is a nonprofit social enterprise focused on improving the health and wellbeing of families through good food. Their aim is to ‘wage war on food waste and malnutrition by providing families with food parcels as well as the means to cook, eat and thrive on healthy home-cooked dishes. Food Troops began as cookery classes for children in 2019 and have since extended their services by redistributing surplus food, in turn reducing the massive burden of food waste that we face today. Their goals for the future are to continue supporting those in need with dietary issues and other hurdles they face that are preventing them from achieving their maximum potential due to health implications and dietary/lifestyle choices.

OUR COMMUNITY KITCHEN / GARDEN SPACE

In January 2022 We opened a community space in Redruth with the help of support from Cormac and Cornwall Council and many wonderful supporters from our community through our crowdfunder! We have set up the community space to create an inclusive space aimed at families, to Cook, Grow and Thrive in, in response to the struggles many are facing as a result of the current food system (exacerbated by the COVID-19 lockdowns)!

We have since launched a community fridge; where we distribute our surplus food rescU packs from our community kitchen and contribute/pay as they feel. We also plan to provide cooked meals, nutritional advice and guidance as well as a safe space for families to come and cook, grow and thrive! We also aim to re-launch our cookery classes and Vegucation Club service from the spring 2022 also.

Alongside our community kitchen we have our community garden, a great site outside where we plan to grow food following permaculture principles, within our two large polytunnels and surrounding cold frames as well as run workshops and hold community events within this.

Where are we?

We are located next to the kid’s paly area, just up from the bowling entrance of Victoria Park, Park Road, Redruth TR15 2JA.

Currently our community fridge is open 12-2 Mondays and Tuesdays, we also welcome volunteers for our community garden along at this time too. Though do keep an eye out on our Facebook group for updates on these times!

What to get involved?

We welcome volunteers within our community space from various backgrounds and particularly interested in welcoming compassionate individuals with experience and/or a keen interest in gardening, permaculture, healthy eating, cooking marketing, admin, leadership and/or supporting and nourishing the community of Redruth and beyond! If you feel you can spare some time to support our cause do feel free to fill in our volunteer questionnaire, drop us a message through facebook or send Carrie a whatsapp and we will add you to our group!
